▏▎▍ • CONTENTION  -  TWIN

Vergil is the twin brother of none other than the protagonist of Devil May Cry. Between them, Vergil is referred to as the older brother, as Dante is the younger. Although their pasts may have been a difficult one, no matter how battered they are from fighting, they care and love each other as with most siblings do, but in their own twisted and unique way.

  ± Red & Blue
Hate is often seen as a strong word. As for the many times Dante had probably stated how much he hated his brother, Vergil never once said that he hated Dante. It's inevitable for him to feel somewhat hurt by comments like that, but he never physically shows it. Why all the hate? Was it because Vergil mysteriously left him for many years? Was it because he wasn't getting enough attention from him? Yes, he did randomly leave him, but the question should be where or how far he went? As for attention, Vergil did give it to him when necessary while they were in the Temen-ni-Gru. The problem with the brothers is that they are too much alike, but yet different. In other words, they clash. For instance, they are both cocky. Dante proves it more so through words, while Vergil mainly does it through actions. Do words hurt more than actions, or do actions hurt more than words? They both have a fine taste for all things 'classy'. As Dante is seen dressed in a rugged rock star fashion, Vergil dresses in a more classic attire. It can even be seen via their fighting preferences. They both use swords, but the swords themselves and the way the brothers use them are different. It is the differences in their similarities that distance them.

  ± Good/Evil Twin
Vergil is not the "evil twin". He has good intentions, but achieves them the wrong way because he is misguided. What appears to be the reason why Vergil lingers for power is most likely because he wants to protect his brother. It is as if he feels obligated as an older brother to protect his younger brother, but who in the right state of mind would ever risk a chance of the world falling into chaos just to acquire power to do so? It's a bit flattering, but yet insane? There are hundreds of options Vergil could have taken, but he chosen the path to resurrect the Temen-ni-Gru which was possibly inspired by misunderstanding his father's legacy, as with blindly challenging Mundus to a fight with the thinking of because his father could defeat him he could himself. Vergil was basically so obsessed by the acquisition of power that he lost the reason why he wanted it in the first place. However, it didn't seem as if he regret any of it while encountering Dante in the Temen-ni-Gru, but after losing the fight against his brother, he began to show signs of collected insanity, and he literally jumped to another reason to why he revived the tower by staying behind in the demon world because tt was their father's home.

Why did Vergil choose evil above all else to acquire power? Vergil doesn't necessarily dislike his mother for providing his human side. It is more as if he resents the fact that he is half human in general, because in his eyes, humans are powerless when it comes to hierarchal dominance in strength. Perhaps it is because being of half demon and human heritage that he sees that to acquire power he must return back to the roots that provide him with it?

  ± Another Weakness
Apart from wanting power, Vergil's other weakness is not recognizing Dante's strength and abilities as an individual. For being the younger brother, Vergil instantly views him as weak and inferior. Vergil does recognize his brother's growth. However, in his eyes, it is never good enough. As Vergil mentioned to his brother "Foolishness, Dante. Foolishness. Might controls everything, and without strength, you cannot protect anything, let alone yourself.". It is as if Vergil is speaking from past experience. Might something have happened apart from their mother's death that caused Vergil to search for power? But then why would Vergil leave Dante if he sees that it is his duty to protect his brother? Vergi's misconceptions over his brother's ability also spans into their brotherly rivalry. Everything ranging from their chocolate birthday cake to flaunting new "toys' such as the scene when Vergil shows off Beowulf prior to their second fight in the Temen-ni-Gru. The problem with Vergil is that he doesn't see himself and Dante as two parts of a whole. He sees himself as an individual, rather than a twin. Therefore, as the older brother, he will rarely give into Dante's ideas and ways. Need not mention recognizing the fact that his brother's strength will eventually exceed his own. Dante, however, understands that with his brother he can achieve much more than by himself.
