▏▎▍ • CONTENTION - A SENSE OF TIME
When the stories of the Devil May Cry games are put together, it creates a odd and confusing timeline. Remember, this is based on the games only. No manga, no novel, just the game.
The first games states that the human and demon conflict Sparda was involved in happened two thousand years ago. It is unknown when the second which involved the Temen-ni-Gru tower began, but when Vergil revived the tower it was said to be two thousand years since Sparda sealed it.
The idea that Vergil revived the Temen-ni-Gru two thousand years after Sparda sealed it brings problems to the fact that Dante lost his mother and his brother to evil twenty years prior to the events of the first Devil May Cry game, as Trish states in the game. If Sparda sealed the tower two
thousand years ago, then how did Eva survive the one thousand and eighty so years between the events of that and the first game? Or perhaps the question should be when did Eva die? If Vergil was "lost to evil" twenty years prior, how much time has passed since then and Dante meeting Trish?
Also, how did Vergil get "lost to evil"? Was it when he began craving power or when he lost against the fight with Mundus? Also, another problem is how long did Vergil leave Dante prior to the events of the third Devil May Cry game? In the game, Dante said it was one year. However, the game manuals says
that Vergil disappeared for many years.
Here is the gist of it...
- 2000 years ago
War between humans and demons. Reason for it is unknown. Sparda stood up against the legion alone
- ???
After the war, Sparda lives with humans. Sparks fly between him and Eva. If it doesn't happen now, then how do they have kids? It has to happen sometime...

- ???
Temen-ni-Gru is built. Or perhaps this is when Sparda and Eva does you know what that resulted in two bundles of joy?

- ???
Sparda battles Mundus, seals Temen-ni-Gru, and himself resulting in his death.

- ???
Eva dies. Vergil is "taken (or effected) by evil" at this time, before, or later?

- "Nearly One Year" before the events of Devil May Cry 3
Vergil leaves Dante. [ as he is "taken by evil" (?) ]

- 2000 years since Temen-ni-Gru was sealed
Vergil with the help of Arkham revives the Temen-ni-Gru. The events of Devil May Cry 3 begins,
and concludes with Vergil staying in the demon world.
Vergil battles Mundus and is assumed to have lost the fight. Vergil becomes a servant of Mundus as he is now Nelo Angelo.

- ???
Dante meets Trish. Events of Devil May Cry begins.
Dante meets Nelo Angelo for the first time. They proceed to fight three times, the third which resulted in Nelo Angelo's "defeat" as he is seen to dissapear. Nelo Angelo leaves behind his half of the amulet after the fight.

- ???
Dante meets Nero. Events of Devil May Cry 4 begins.

- ???
Dante meets Lucia. Events of Devil May Cry 2 beings.

In conclusion, to me, it only makes sense if you ignore the idea of 20 years when Dante lost his mother and Vergil to evil. If Eva died the same time Vergil was "lost to evil", it would give a more legitimate reason to why Vergil lusts for power. Twenty years doesn't work because there's no way Eva could have lived that long because she's human.
One last question : How old are Dante and Vergil? Considering the "timeline" I made, perhaps they are over two thousand years old? That could be a possibility since they do have demon blood in them.
