▏▎▍ • CONTENTION - PROFILE
Unlike a majority of videogame characters, none of those in the Devil May Cry series were given personal profiles. In other words, they were not given statistical information such as exact height, weight, age, and so forth. So technically, all we know for sure is that Vergil is his name, he is the twin brother of Dante, and a son of Sparda.
He is known as either Vergil or Nelo Angelo. Throughout the series, he seems to be one of Dante's primary antagonists, but once one understands the reasons behind Vergil's motives and actions, one may realize that he is not evil as evil as he is perceived to but rather just misguided.
As there are a few games in the Devil May Cry series, the third game happens to be the prequel to the first. In it you encounter a young Dante who is about to set up shop for his unnamed demon hunting business. Following the sudden rise of the Temen-ni-Gru, Dante eventually meets up with his brother Vergil who is attempting to open the door to the demon world in order for him to acquire his father's, Sparda, power. As events progress, Vergil realizes that he had been tricked by Arkham, his partner in this plan who also happens to be a demon possessed man who also shares the same goal. The game concludes with Dante and Vergil joining forces to take down Arkham, and a final duel between the brothers which resulted in Vergil losing. Due to unknown reasons of attachments to his father, Vergil stays behind in the demon world to fight Mundus. Although the outcome of the fight between Mundus and Vergil was not shown in the third game, the results of it are shown in the first, the emergence of the Dark Knight
Nelo Angelo.
In the first game, Vergil as Nelo Angelo does not speak, but it is through actions and visual cues that Dante realizes the true identity of the Dark Knight. Three of the most obvious hints to Nelo Angelo's identity include the mirror scene in which Nelo Angelo emerges out of Dante's reflection, Nelo Angelo's fighting style being similar to Dante's, and his reaction when he caught a glimpse of Dante's half of the amulets. As Nelo Angelo lost all three of the fights he had against Dante, the game does not give much information in regards to the result of Nelo Angelo after the third fight apart from Mundus mentioning that he had "failed".
