As with a lot of things in the Devil May Cry series, Dante and Vergil's past mostly remain a mystery. However, one can gather what might have happened when taking into consideration how they act in the series.

The only instance in the game which displays a scene in Dante and Vergil's past was at the end of the third fight with Nelo Angelo in Devil May Cry. There was a moment when Dante held his half of the amulet and there was a sudden flash back of one of his and Vergil's birthday when they were younger. That particular scene confirms that their mother was still alive when they were younger. By the maturity of their voices, the brothers would probably be around ten years of age. In addition, the brothers seem to like chocolate... (chocolate birthday cake = devil's food)

Although both Dante and Vergil are twins they separate themselves as older and younger brothers, something which might be linked to their childhood days when children are prone to believe that being older would give them more authority. Vergil is seen as the older brother and Dante as the younger.

Vergil's admiration for his father probably came to be when he was younger. It is unknown whether or not Dante and Vergil have met their father or whether they were even born before he died. However, in the first game, Dante did mention that his mother praised his father for his "courage" and "righteous heart". So, perhaps se had told Dante and Vergil stories about their father when she was alive. Whether it be Vergil experiencing the loss of his father, the admiration for the reason why his father left, or becoming inspired by his mother describing his father, Vergil developed an admiration for him.
