  ± Vergil
Since Devil May Cry is loosely based on Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, Vergil is without a doubt named after Dante's guide through hell, Virgil. The Virgil in The Divine Comedy is Alighieri's personification of the Roman poet, Publius Vergilius Maro, the author of Aeneid. He is also known as Vergil or Virgil in English. In Alighieri's time, the poet Virgil was seen to be a type of mage figure as people would use his poems as some may use the Bible. The reason why Alighieri used Virgil as his guide is because he sees him as his master, and his older works being the inspiration of his own poetic styles. For instance, the pattern used in Virgil's Aeneid was the structure for Alighieri's Hell.

The two Vergils are very much alike, as they both act as a guide for Dante. For instance, in Devil May Cry 3 Vergil can be seen guiding Dante through the depths of the Temen-ni-Gru. Also, in Devil May Cry Nelo Angelo seems to also guide Dante through Mallet Island.

  ± Nelo Angelo
Nelo is a transliteration error that is maintained throughout the series. Since Devil May Cry is produced in Japan, the transliteration error occurred in the katakana used for Nero (ネロ). When "ro" (ロ) is translated, the "R" can be interchanged with "L". Thus, we have Nelo Angelo. The name is in Italian and translates to "black angel" in English.
