Dante and Vergil are always seen carrying two specific items. An amulet with a red jewel embedded, and a sword. They are items which are linked to both the reason and most possibly the resolve of the Devil May Cry story.

  ± The Swords
As a keepsake from their father, Dante was given Rebellion, and Vergil was given Yamato. As Vergil revived the Temen-ni-Gru there was a third sword, Force Edge, which is known to harbor the power of their father. Force Edge was wielded by Vergil for a short time, and was left for Dante who then later passed it on to Trish.

  ± The Amulets
The amulet Sparda wore was given as a gift to humans, In particular it was given to Eva. It was the key to unlocking the path between the human and demon worlds which Sparda closed. When Eva died, the amulet was passed down to Dante and Vergil as a keepsake from their mother. It was probably then the amulet was split in two because they are often referred to as "halves" in the series. Dante's half was fitted in silver and Vergil's was in gold.

± "You showed me your love in the light of the stars"
As the swords were given to each of the brothers so that they could defend and, the amulets primarily serve to protect them from themselves. For Vergil, his half of the amulet plays a vital role in the Devil May Cry story. For instance, when Dante was reunited with Vergil while they were on Mallet Island, the thing which triggered Nelo Angelo to go berserk was the sight of Dante's half of the amulet. The reason for that is because the amulets symbolize their humanity. Not only was it a "gift to humans", it also represents and is a constant reminder of the human side of their half demon half human heritage, and the memory of their mother. Another instance was when Vergil was planning on reviving the Temen-ni-Gru, he sought to use Dante's half of the amulet without his permission or understanding of what it would be used for. In the tower, the further he got closer to the gate between the human and demon world the more inhuman he became. By the time he reached the gate and lost the fight with his brother, he basically becomes crazed. As Dante gave the final blow, Vergil drops two items: his half of the amulet, and the Force Edge. Vergil reaches for his half of the amulet, clenches it against his chest, and says "No one can have this. This is mine, it belongs to a son of Sparda". In other words, although Vergil may seem to detest humans, his human half is something which he cannot let go.

Currently in the series, Vergil is without his half of the amulet. It is in Dante's posession, as Vergil had dropped it while going berserk after the third fight he had with him on Mallet Island. In future installments of the series how would Vergil be like now that he doesn't have his half of the amulet? Will he be more ruthless than he already is? Will he be seeking to get his half back?
