▏▎▍ • CONTENTION - THE SPARDA FAMILY
The protagonist of Devil May Cry, Dante, and his twin brother, Vergil, are known to be the sons of Sparda. As their father, Sparda, is demon, and their mother, Eva, is human,
the most notable thing about them is that they are of half-demon and half-human
heritage. Apart from that, not much has been mentioned in the series in regards to the past of Sparda, Eva, Dante, and Vergil
apart from brief descriptions of the acts Sparda did which made him into a legend.
In the Devil May Cry series, the story of the Sparda family seems to be widely known among both human and demons. For humans, it has been written in books and is treated as if it were a myth. Among the demons, it is more so known as a factual bitter story of betrayal.
In the first Devil May Cry game, the prologue explains that there was a war between the human and demon world two millenniums ago. During that time, Sparda, who was part of the demon world, rose up against the legion alone. Later, it is said that he resided in the human world
where it is assumed that it is then he had children with Eva. In the third Devil May Cry game there is mention of another conflict between the human and demon world which Sparda was involved with. The prologue of the game makes little mention of it. However, it is explained in
the game manual. It speaks of the many men who worshipped and were possessed by the power of demons. Since they were so obsessed with it, they desired the power for themselves. To accomplish that they built a tower, Temen-ni-Gru, to conjoin the human and the demon world. Sparda
fought against this and the demon empire. He was determined to seal the path connecting between the human and demon world, and while doing so he realized the extent of his power power. Thus, while doing so, he sacrificed a pure maiden, and his own blood to seal himself and the world which bears harm to others and his family.
As for what was mentioned of Eva, Dante, and Vergil's past, the first Devil May Cry game mentions that Dante had lost his mother and brother to evil twenty years ago. What that probably meant was that his mother was killed by what is assumed as those who seeked revenge for Sparda's final actions,
and Vergil who had developed a lust for power. As for it happening twenty years ago, it ties into the odd sense of time the Devil May Cry storyline has. In the first Devil May Cry's design work there is a family picture of the Sparda family when Dante and Vergil were still infants. The third
game, it hints that both Dante and Vergil might have known their father before he died because of the strong love-hate perception they have towards him. It is as if their father's second revolt against demons happened while they were still very young.
The series describes Sparda as being a demon of courage and righteousness. He went against his own kind twice, but with no mention on why he did it. Did he meet Eva during or after the first revolt? Perhaps the meeting of Eva during the war was the cause of his betrayal, but then the fact that
the war happened two thousand years ago arises. If Sparda met Eva after the war, it gives reasoning to why he might have resided with the humans for such a long time. As for the reason for the second revolt, might it be because he was doing it for his children? Would his parenting instincts to protect
caused him to revolt against his own kind and make the ultimate sacrifice so that his children can grow up in a safely?
