▏▎▍ • INFORMATION - WHILE IN BATTLE
Having Demon blood running through their veins, fighting is something Vergil craves. He enjoys it, and is constantly in search of a more challenging and worthy opponent.
It can be visibly seen that Dante and Vergil are familiar with each others fighting styles, as if they have been fighting together for a long time. When they fought against Arkham together, they didn't have to tell each other what to do. It seemed as if it were intuition. Looking at them separately one may notice that Dante and Vergil's fighting styles are complimentary to each other. Well, they are twins after all. An example of this would be Beowulf. Dante's move set for it mainly consists that of punches, whereas Vergil's moveset mostly consists that of kicks. Rebellion and Yamato, the brothers primary weapons are also complimentary as Yamato is mainly based for distance. Rebellion is mainly based on closer range. Something to note is that Dante and Vergil can use each other's weapons with no problems, but when they do they use it in a different style. For instance, while battling Arkham together, Dante is seen using Yamato in a different way than Vergil would use it. However, one must consider that Dante didn't have the sheath at the time.
± Style: Darkslayer
In Devil May Cry 3, characters are sometimes marked by a fighting "style". Vergil's style is called "Dark Slayer", and is described as a style used by a "warrior fallen from grace". It consists of only teleportation skills which enable him to instantly appear by enemies or in another part of a room. Vergil also retains these teleportation skills when he assumes the role of Nelo Angelo. Instead of seeing a flicker while he is teleporting himself, there is a puff of purplish blue smoke left behind. Nelo Angelo can also produce the smoke with his fist, and use it as an attack without teleporting.
± Yamato
Since the start, the creators of the Devil May Cry series had always planned for Vergil to use a Japanese sword, a katana, as his main weapon. The sword is named Yamato (闇魔刀) which basically means "dark demon sword" in Japanese.
The way Vergil uses it in battle is in a style similar to Iaido, where one would quickly pull the sword out of its sheath. One of the most notable things with Yamato is the end of the handle. It is an image of something which resembles a dragon that is twisted in form of an "S".
In addition, on the sheath, there is a yellow flat cord. The reason for the yellow cord may be a way Vergil taunts his opponents. Since Vergil is known for his speed with Yamato, the chord may be used by an opponent to read his movements. In other words, it's a tool for taunting. Yamato is also Nelo Angelo's primary weapon. Since Vergil is under the influence of Mundus while in that form, Yamato becomes a huge sword that resembles the material used for his armor.
± Beowulf
Beowulf was a demon who Sparda had fought in the Temen-ni-Gru. A notable result of that battle is Beowulf having one eye blinded, and the development of a strong resentment towards Sparda and his family due to his betrayal against the demon kind. As the Temen-ni-Gru was revived two thousand years later, Dante is faced with "cleaning up his father's mess". The battle resulted in Beowulf having his other eye blinded. Eventually he made his way to Vergil which led to the battle that concluded with his death. What was left behind in that battle were a pair of gauntlets and greaves which Vergil uses to fight Dante, but were later given to his brother as he had lost the fight. A notable thing about Beowulf is that the gauntlets and greaves are light based and are in shape of paws.
± Force Edge
Force Edge is the sword which Sparda had sealed his own power with. One of the reasons Arkham and Vergil had revived the Temen-ni-Gru and the opening of the gates to the demon world was to get it. As the weakened Dante and Vergil lost the fight against Arkham in the room where the demon world gate seal was broken, Arkham was the first to wield the Force Edge. As a result of being human, Arkham basically became a round glob because his body couldn't handle the pressure. Later the twins win their fight against the enhanced globular Arkham, Vergil was next to posess the sword which then triggered a fight between the brothers. After Dante lands his final blow, Vergil drops two items, his half of the amulet and the Force Edge. Vergil retrieves only the amulet, and proceeds to trap himself in the demon world. Having left the Force Edge behind for Dante probably signifies that Vergil no longer needs it since the one he wants to protect has become strong enough to protect himself, or the fact that he lost the fight. Dante does take the Force Edge, but later gives it to Trish.
± Summoned Swords
Vergil has strong beliefs against using guns as he doesn't view them as weapons of a true warrior. The only instance of him using them was while he and Dante were delivering the final blow during their fight against Arkham. Instead of guns, Vergil sues summoned swords. They are projectile swords which magically appear and shoot in the direction of the user's will. The summoned swords in Devil May Cry 3 look similar to the Force Edge. As for the "magic" aspect of these swords, perhaps it has loose ties to the fact that people once considered Publius Vergilius Maro as a "wizard" of sorts.
